Doris Elaine (Hayes) Moore

January 11, 1931 — June 9, 2014

Doris Elaine (Hayes) Moore, one of six children of Arlington “A.C.” and Pearl (Stoddard) Hayes, was born January 11, 1931 at Glen Rock, Nebraska. Doris attended rural school growing up, and graduated from Bratton Union High School. She then went on to Peru State College where she earned her teaching certificate.

On April 11, 1952, Doris was united in marriage to Leonard Moore at the First United Methodist Church in Auburn. Three children were born to this union: Nicky Jo, Harold, and Jerrilynne. The couple made their home on Leonard’s family farm near Nemaha.

In her earlier years, Doris taught in rural Nemaha and Richardson counties. She always devoted herself to raising her children and running the household. She also helped Leonard out with the farming. Doris and Leonard farmed until retiring in 1987 and moving to Arizona. While in Arizona, they lived in Tucson and Sun City, before returning to Auburn in 2004.

Doris was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church, belonging to the Nemaha church, St. John’s and Willow Brook Methodist in Arizona, and the First United Methodist Church in Auburn. Doris was a member of a sewing shop while in Tucson. She loved to sew any chance she got, especially her Christmas tree skirts she made hoping to sell.

When Doris was no longer able to live on her own, she moved to the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn. After a decline in health, Doris was transferred to Bryan Medical Center East in Lincoln. It is there that she passed away on Monday, June 9, 2014, having reached the age of 83 years, 4 months, 29 days. Along with her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her husband Leonard, brothers Harold and Melvin, sister Connie Workman, and daughter-in-law Jeanne Moore.

Doris is survived by her children and spouses Nicky Jo and Greg Herner of Hanover Park, IL, Harold and Cyndy Moore of Fairfax, MO, Jerrilynne Moore of Lincoln; grandchildren Erin Herner, Kerri and husband Joe Liu, Andrew and wife Kristy Herner, William Herner, Lacy and husband Chuck Rudisill, Luke Moore; great-grandchildren Oliver Liu, Elyzabeth Copeland, Andrea Copeland, John James Copeland, Mikal Whatley, brothers and sisters-in-law Gerald and Judy Hayes of Humboldt, Marvin and Mary Hayes of Nixa, MO; other relatives and friends.

Memorials are suggested to Good Samaritan Society of Auburn, Auburn First United Methodist Church, or Nemaha United Methodist Church.
