Dorothy Hammen

October 30, 1913 — June 27, 2007

Dorothy Gertrude Hammen, one of two children of Thomas E. and Ada Louella (DeKruyff) Steinbrook, was born October 30, 1913 at Kansas City, Missouri. After Thomas?s death, Ada married Harry Nelson, who helped to raise the children. She attended public schools in Kansas City, and graduated from Westport High School.

Dorothy started her career as a stock girl in Kansas City. She then worked for 29 years as a bookkeeper with Avon in Kansas City. She then purchased and operated the Laurie Dime Store in Laurie, Missouri from 1963 until her retirement in 1974. She also served as the Postmistress in Laurie.

While in Auburn, Nebraska, Dorothy attended the Auburn Christian Church. She was a member of the Auburn Eagles Auxiliary, and loved to play bingo in the area.

Dorothy entered the Nemaha County Good Samaritan Center in Auburn recently, and it was there she passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at the age of 93 years, 7 months, and 27 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, and brother and sister-in-law Larry and Margaret Nelson.

Dorothy is survived by her nieces and nephews Faith Newman of Topeka, KS; Peggy and husband Bill Dahms of Denver, CO; Dottie and husband Rich Holliday of Auburn; Harry Nelson of Monmouth, OR; Larry and wife Cindy Nelson of Breckenridge, CO; Jim and wife Cathy Nelson of Benton, KS; very special friend Millie Ruyle of Auburn; and many other friends.

Dorothy?s body was donated to the Nebraska Anatomical Board, and no services are planned.

Memorials are suggested to the Auburn Rescue Squad, Auburn Volunteer Fire Department, or the Auburn Senior Center, and may be sent to Hemmingsen Funeral Home, 801 ?S? Street, Auburn, NE 68305.
