Leota Moore

September 20, 1912 — January 4, 2010

Leota Mary Moore, one of ten children of George W. and Mable (Tucker) Moore, was born in the family home in Johnson on September 20, 1912. She was baptized in the Methodist Church in Johnson. Tootie attended Johnson Public School, graduating from high school in 1930. She loved playing on the school basketball team and on the Johnson softball team.

Tootie graduated from Peru College with a teaching degree, and also received a degree from the University of Nebraska. She began her teaching career at several country schools, including Independence and Washington. In August of 1949 she started teaching at Johnson Public School, and taught there until her retirement in May of 1974. Tootie?s love of teaching left a positive impact on many, many students.

Leota and Arnold (Snick) Wagner, her friend of many years, spent many evenings on her back patio or traveling to area towns to play bingo. Tootie?s love of sports also continued throughout her life, as she was an avid baseball and Husker football fan. She especially enjoyed watching the World Series.

In her spare time Tootie liked to sew, knit, crochet, and do crafts of all kinds. She had a green thumb second to none, and her yard and home were filled with beautiful plants and flowers. She was a loving sister, wonderful aunt, and friend and neighbor to many.

Tootie entered the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn in December of 2000, and joined in the activities there when she was able. It was there she passed away on Monday, January 4, 2010 at the age of 97 years, 3 months, and 15 days. Tootie was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Walter, George (June), Dale, and an infant brother; sisters Betty Moore, Bertha Bunker, and Doris Behrends.

Tootie is survived by her sisters Shirley Gerdes of Auburn; Marilyn Heater of Lincoln; sisters-in-law Jeraldiene Moore of Johnson, Ruth E. Moore of Papillion; several nieces and nephews, and many friends.
