Lois Maxine (Remmers), one of four daughters of R. Wiley and Maxine (Aufenkamp) Remmers, was born December 9, 1942 at Humboldt, Nebraska. Lois was baptized January 31, 1943 and confirmed December 16, 1956 at St. John Lutheran (Stone) Church near Auburn, Nebraska. Lois attended rural school near her home and graduated from Johnson High School. She received her teaching degree from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa and her Master?s in Music at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
Lois was married to Harold Schlachtenhaufen for many years. Their union was blessed with one son, Joel. The couple later divorced and eventually Lois married Henry Callan when his sons Michael, Steve, and Tom joined her family. Lois and Henry divorced and much later in life she was married to Steve Goodman.
As a long time high school music teacher in Dubuque, Iowa, Lois instilled her love for music in many of her students and others around her. After retiring from teaching she held a realtor?s license as well as a contractor?s license in Arizona. While living in Phoenix, she spent much of her time visiting her mother Maxine in Auburn.
In addition to her musical talents Lois had many other interests. She loved horseback riding and antiquing. She was an avid reader and enjoyed creative writing. What brought her the most joy was the time she spent with her grandchildren, nephews, and nieces.
On Sunday, February 10, 2013, while travelling back to her home in Phoenix, Lois died in a vehicle accident at the age of 70 years, 2 months, and 1 day. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, father Wiley, and husband Steve.
Survivors include her son Joel Schlachtenhaufen and wife Kim of Plymouth, MN; step-sons Michael Callan and wife Laura of Clinton, IA; Steve Callan of McCall, ID; Tom Callan of Dubuque, IA; grandchildren Ben, Jay, Trent, and Ellie Schlachtenhaufen; 7 step-grandchildren; mother Maxine Remmers of Auburn; sisters Joyce Bruggeman of Grand Junction, CO; Janice Guilliatt and husband Michael of Fremont, NE; Jacque Branda and husband Brian of Houston, TX; aunts and uncle, Dorothy Aufenkamp of Julian; William and Lavonda Abernathy of Nebraska City; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were Saturday, February 16, 2013 at St. John Lutheran (Stone) Church near Auburn, officiated by Rev. Catherine Burroughs. Susie Hogrefe was organist for special congregational singing. John Kreinhop and Allyn Remmers read scripture. Lois? body was cremated following the services.
