Lowell Furnas

January 24, 1919 — January 7, 2011

Lowell Deweese Furnas was born January 24, 1919 on a farm north of Brownville, Nebraska to Deweese and Mildred (Young) Furnas. He was one of 14 children. Lowell attended school and the Methodist Church in Brownville.

On January 27, 1944 Lowell was united in marriage to Phyllis Snyder. To this union three children were born: Angela, Diana, and Joseph. The couple was married for almost 67 years.

Lowell worked for the Corps of Engineers on the Missouri River for 31 years as a truck driver and deck hand. He spent many hours on flood duty and clean-up during the springtime. Lowell also worked on the construction of the Cooper Nuclear Station and on the cruise boats docked at Brownville. He was a hard worker and great provider for his family. Lowell also loved raising cattle, and continued to do so until he was 85. In his spare time he liked to garden, and especially enjoyed playing cards with his family and buddies. Lowell also liked watching football and cheering on the Huskers.

On January 3, 2011 Lowell suddenly became ill and was rushed to the Nemaha County Hospital in Auburn, Nebraska. It was there he passed away, having reached the age of 91 years, 11 months, and 10 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and six sisters.
