Mabel Harshbarger

Mabel O. Harshbarger, daughter of Henry W. and Edith Mae (Cross) Kyriss, was born February 24, 1918 in Auburn, Nebraska. She was the youngest of six children. As a child, Mabel was baptized in the Methodist Church, and later became a member of Avenue Methodist Church in Auburn.

She received her education in the Auburn Public Schools, and graduated from Auburn High School. After graduation, Mabel attended sheet metal training in Nebraska City. She later was employed by Safeway Stores in Nebraska City as a checker.

On June 10, 1944, Mabel was united in marriage to Otis C. Harshbarger at Hiawatha, Kansas. To this union one son, James, was born. Since their marriage, Mabel resided her entire life in Auburn. Her husband passed away in July of 1952.

After the death of her husband, she conducted a laundry service out of her home for several years. From 1960 until her retirement in 1980, Mabel was employed by the Auburn School District, working under her good friend Eunice Oakley as a lunchroom cook at Calvert Elementary School.

As a result of joining the Nemaha County Hospital Auxiliary in its early years and being a charter member of the Nemaha Valley CB Club, Mabel became interested in a hobby of craft work. She made many items for both clubs? craft bazaars for several years. She was also a charter member of the Sheridan Cemetery Association and a member of the Senior Citizens Club in Auburn.

Mabel was a devoted and loving mother and friend to many who knew her. She enjoyed listening to old country music and working word puzzles. In her retirement years, Mabel gained much pleasure from making craft items for her friends.

Mabel had temporarily been residing at the Nemaha County Good Samaritan Center in Auburn. She became extremely ill and was transferred to Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln. It was there she passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at the age of 88 years, 11 months, and 28 days. Besides her parents and husband, Mabel was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Mabel leaves to mourn her passing her son James of Auburn; five nieces; special friends Ruth McMaster, Mildred Beason, and Eunice Oakley; other relatives and many friends.

Mabel?s funeral service and burial was on February 24, 2007, which would have been her 89th birthday.
