Worthy Armstrong

Worthy Wayne Armstrong was born April 17, 1920 on a farm east of Auburn, Nebraska. One of four sons born to Samuel and Ella (Moore) Armstrong, Worthy received most of his formal education in Brownville, Nebraska and graduated from Auburn High School in 1939. Worthy?s family also lived for a short time in Independence, Missouri when he was a boy.

On October 20, 1942 Worthy entered the United States Army. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Following his honorable discharge in 1945, Worthy returned to Auburn to live and work. He worked at Armstrong Feed & Produce until 1961, when he became a farm chemical salesman for Midwest Chemical Company. That company was acquired by ConAgra, and Worthy continued in his position until his retirement in 1990.

Worthy was united in marriage to Kathryn Ann Goff on June 26, 1960 at Verdon, Nebraska. Worthy?s children Ross and Ardena would later be joined by the birth of Jack and Pamela to make up Worthy and Ann?s family.

Worthy was a member of the American Legion and VFW Posts in Auburn, and enjoyed fishing when he had the time. He was also a marble and coin collector, and possessed an extensive collection of each.

After a period of ill health, Worthy was rushed to the Nemaha County Hospital on Friday, December 10, 2010. With Ann at his side, he passed away there at the age of 90 years, 7 months, and 23 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Eugene, Howard & Melvin, and grandson Matthew.

Worthy is survived by his wife Kathyrn Ann of Auburn; children Ross and wife Jean Armstrong of Kearney, Ardena and husband Paul Colabello of Omaha, Jack Armstrong of Louisville, Pamela and husband George Tirado of Lake in the Hills, IL; grandchildren Eric Armstrong, Nicole Kollars, Kevin Colabello, Paige Herrmann, and Trenten Herrmann; several great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn, officiated by Rev. Tom Osborne. Special pre-recorded music was played. Pallbearers were Kevin Colabello, Chad Kollars, Steve Bedea, Marvin Goff, Steve Oakley, and George Tirado. Burial followed in the Sheridan Cemetery near Auburn with graveside military honors provided by American Legion Post #23 of Auburn and Nebraska National Guard Honor Guard.
