H. Maxine Remmers

December 31, 1917 — April 10, 2015

Hazel Maxine Remmers was born on December 31, 1917 in Julian, Nebraska. Her parents were Senator John Aufenkamp and Hazel (Wells) Aufenkamp.

Maxine graduated from Julian High School in 1935 and Peru State College in 1939 with majors in home economics and business. While at Peru College she was a member of the college choir where she met Wiley Remmers. Later during her teaching career she took graduate hours at Peru State and the University of Nebraska. Upon graduating from Peru State College in 1939 she taught at Alton, Iowa.

In the spring of 1940 on June 6th Maxine married Wiley Remmers. After her marriage she taught school at Garland, Bratton Union, and Johnson-Brock schools. While teaching at Johnson she was the sponsor of the junior class, school paper, and pep club. In addition to her teaching she served as principal for four years.

Maxine was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church, WELCA, and St. John’s choir. She was a member of the Golden Rule Extension Club, Auburn Women’s Club, Delta Kappa Gamma and the Nemaha County Hospital Auxiliary. During the time Wiley was a senator in the Nebraska State Legislature, Maxine was a member and held offices in the Nebraska Legislative League and the Unicameral Club.

Maxine liked playing bridge, sewing, dancing, fishing, and keeping up to date on her former students’ lives. She enjoyed horses, and was a skilled rider. She took an active interest in the farm operation and particularly liked helping with the cattle. Maxine loved spending time with her friends and family, enjoyed following the stock market on a daily basis, and had a great sense of humor. Her home was always the gathering place for family and friends but taking care of Wiley and their four daughters was at the top of her list.
