Jack Conn

Jack Galen Conn, son of Adelbert ?Kelly? and Blanche (LaVigne) Conn, was born October 10, 1918 on a farm between Auburn and Brock, Nebraska. One of eight children, he attended Center School north of Auburn.
On December 20, 1939 Jack was united in marriage to Henrietta Millet in Sidney, Iowa. They made their home in Nemaha County, and would be blessed with three children: Galen, Linda, and Deborah.
To serve his country, Jack entered the U.S. Army on November 11, 1944. He served part of World War II in the Philippines. Following his honorable discharge on January 8, 1946, Jack returned to the Auburn area.
Jack began his working years at a packing plant in Omaha, Nebraska. He then began work at Heskett Implement, a John Deere dealership in Auburn, where he was employed for six years. For the next twenty years, Jack worked as a mechanic and fill-in driver for Darling Transfer in Auburn. From there, he worked for 25 years as a mechanic at Moody Implement north of Auburn.
Jack was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Auburn, and had been a member of the Auburn American Legion Post #23. He loved to hunt and fish when he was able, and was known for the intricate work he did with wood. He made many wood cars and trucks, as well as furniture pieces, always with a precise attention to detail. Until his last days he had an uncanny ability to remember exactly where tools and other items could be found.
In June of 2011 Jack became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn, enjoying the time he spent there. With family around him, he passed away at Good Sam on Sunday, October 14, 2012 four days after his 94th. In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his wife Henrietta in 1994, daughter Debbie Mintle in 2011, son-in-law Kenny Oestmann in 2002, brothers Lloyd, Vern, Harvey, and Kelly, and sister Esther McConnell.
Jack is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Galen and Marna Conn of DeWitt; daughter Linda Oestmann of Auburn; son-in-law Judd Mintle of Glenwood, IA; grandchildren Greg and wife Kerri Conn, Cara and husband Marshall Shell, Michelle Conn, Jeff and wife Stacey Oestmann, Kim and husband Jeff Denniston, Lonnie and wife Paula Oestmann, Kristen Mintle, Jennifer Mintle, and Ray Vargas; great-grandchildren Andrew and Austin Conn, Trevor, Megan, and Trenton Shell, Thomas Teson, Jarrett and Denton Oestmann, Jacob Denniston, and Zachary and MacKenzie Oestmann ; sisters Norma Lee Conn of Nebraska City; Judy Christiansen of Harlingen, TX; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 17, 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Auburn. Burial will follow in the Sheridan West Cemetery near Auburn, with graveside military honors provided by American Legion Post #23 of Auburn and the Nebraska National Guard Honor Guard. Visitation will be at the funeral home Tuesday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 6:00 to 7:30.
