Joan Fulton

Joan Epperson was born in September 11, 1926 in Magnolia, Iowa to Roy and Nellie (Cody) Epperson. She was one of eleven children. Joan received her education in Logan, Magnolia, and Modale, Iowa schools. She was quite a basketball player in her high school years, and graduated valedictorian of her class in 1944.

Joan worked in Missouri Valley, Iowa as a dental assistant. It was here that she would meet her future husband, Francis Fulton. They were united in marriage August 9, 1947. To this marriage there were 8 children born.

Francis and Joan lived in several towns in Nebraska: Ashland, Fremont, Greenwood, and Murdock. Francis was a sawmill operator, and in 1959 they moved to Brownville where they owned and operated a sawmill and also a Dairy Sweet. In 1975, they purchased the 7 Hills Motel in Brownville. They operated the motel and service station, while their daughter Holly managed the café known as Holly?s Hobby Café.

Francis and Joan retired and moved to Auburn in later years. Francis passed away in 1989, and Joan moved in with daughter Susan Mann and her four children. Susan and granddaughter Sadie Gilliland cared for Joan until her declining health moved her to the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn in August of 2008.

Joan had been declining in health and was put into hospice care at the Good Samaritan Society the first week in March. It was here that she passed away surrounded by many family and friends having reached the age of 84 years, 5 months, and 25 days. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, husband Franics, 4 brothers, 2 sisters, infant son Tommy, son-in-law Alan Gilliland, and infant grandson Scott Mann, Jr.

Joan is survived by her children and their spouses Bob and Lucy Fulton of Auburn, Bill and Lana Fulton of Auburn, Holly Gilliland of Auburn, Julie and Rick Fritz of Dawson, Gene Fulton of Phoenix, AZ, Susan Mann of Auburn, Hayley and Dave Burton of Steamboat Springs, CO; 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren + 4 expected babies; brothers Jerome Epperson of Littleton, CO, Tom and wife Ramona Epperson of Memphis, TN; sisters Mary and husband Milton Niedermyer of Council Bluffs, IA, Eileen and husband Dick Smith of York; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, many friends, new acquaintances of the Good Samaritan staff, and a huge Catholic family.

Funeral Mass was Saturday, March 12, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Father Greg Pawloski was celebrant. Gregg Moran was soloist and played accompaniment to songs lead by Nancy Moran and John Crotty. Serving as pallbearers were Shawn Gibbs, Blaine Boellstorff, Tom Hall, Duane Horner, Jeff Henry, and Jim Florence. Honorary pallbearers were Tony Fulton, Jeff Fulton, Terry Fulton, Eric Fulton, Danny Fulton, Justin Fulton, Bill Gilliland, Nick Mann, Nate Mann, Scott Mann, David Burton, Rick Fritz, Milton Niedermyer, Dick Smith

Jerome Epperson, Tom Epperson, Dr. Dana Farris, Jim ?Salty? Smith, Warren ?Corky? Jones, Loras Baumhover, Dale Thomas, Marty Hayes, and Arlen Holthus. Burial followed in the Holy Cross Cemetery near Auburn.
