Lois Smith

October 16, 1915 — July 18, 2009

Lois Katherine (Handley) Smith was born October 16, 1915 on a farm south of Nemaha, Nebraska. She was one of three children of James C. and Katie L. (Vanderford) Handley. Lois attended Larkin School near her home, and graduated from Nemaha High School in 1934. She went on to receive her teaching certificate from Peru State Teachers College, and taught school for three years until her marriage.

On May 25, 1939 Lois was united in marriage to Donald Irvin Smith at the home of Elder J.W. Sapp in Brownville, Nebraska. They made their home on a farm southwest of Nemaha, and were blessed with two children, Jerry and Nancy.

Lois was first and foremost a homemaker, wife, and mother, but she also helped with the farm work. She later worked part time with the ASCS office in Auburn, Nebraska. In 1980 Lois and ?Bud? retired from the farm and moved into Nemaha.

Lois was a member of the Nemaha Christian Church, where she taught Sunday school. She also attended and played the organ and piano at the United Methodist Church in Nemaha. She was a 50 year member of the Brownville Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and belonged to the Kensington Club as well. Lois enjoyed quilting and knitting. She liked to read, work in her flower garden, and also did some painting when time allowed.

After Donald passed away, Lois stayed at home in Nemaha until 2002, when she moved to Longs Creek Assisted Living in Auburn. She lived there until 2005, when she moved to the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn. Lois passed away there on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at the age of 93 years, 9 months, and 2 days. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother James Howard Handley.

Those left to mourn her passing include her children Jerry and wife Betty Smith of Auburn; Nancy and husband Alvin White of Rock Port, MO; 6 grandchildren; a number of great- and great-great-grandchildren; sister Doris Wheeler of Auburn; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
