Loras H Baumhover

January 26, 1934 — May 18, 2020

Loras Henry Baumhover, one of 16 children of Albert and Dora (Fehring) Baumhover, was born January 26, 1934, in Carroll, Iowa. Loras grew up on a farm outside Carroll, he attended school at and graduated from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic School in Mount Carmel, Iowa.

After high school, Loras enlisted in the United States Army. He served two years of active military service and then transferred to the Army Reserve for 8 years, before being honorably discharged.

In 1959, Loras became a trooper with the Nebraska State Patrol. He was first stationed in Lincoln, where he met his future wife Diane Sue Mahoney. The couple were married May 12, 1962, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Beatrice. Loras and Diane would be blessed with five sons: Steven, Brian, Craig, Kevin, and Shaun. They made their home in Lincoln until moving to Auburn in 1969. Loras was with the Nebraska State Patrol for nearly 30 years, until retiring in 1988. Loras continued his career in law enforcement serving two terms as the Nemaha County Sheriff from 1995-2003.

Loras was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic in Auburn. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion Post #23 of Auburn, and served the community as the Veterans Service Officer of Nemaha County. In his earlier years, Loras enjoyed fishing. He loved to socialize, whether it was over a cup of coffee, a piece of pie, a bowl of popcorn, or a game of cards. Loras often joked that Diane was his social director.

After Diane’s passing in 2014, Loras continued to live in Auburn. He moved to the Long’s Creek Assisted Living until a decline in health moved him to Country House Residence in Council Bluffs, Iowa. It was there that he passed away on Monday, May 18, 2020, having reached the age of 86 years, 3 months, and 22 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Diane, brother Raymond, and sister Mary.
