Mary Straw

Mary Elizabeth (Beason) Straw, one of two daughters of Leonard E. and Mollie (McKnight) Beason, was born June 20, 1919 in rural Nemaha County, Nebraska.

She attended several elementary schools, including St. Deroin, Bratton Union, and Honey Creek, before graduating from Peru Training School. She then received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Peru State College. Mary was baptized in the Disciples of Christ Church in Peru.

On March 28, 1935 Mary was united in marriage to Raymond Straw in Nebraska City, Nebraska. They were blessed with two children, David Ray and Mary Louise.

Mary taught in several schools during her career. She taught for one year in Pueblo, Colorado before returning to Nebraska to teach in District 12 in Nemaha County, Johnson Public Schools, and Echo School in Tecumseh. She retired from teaching in 1971.

While in college, Mary belonged to Kappa Delta Pi, and later in life was very involved with the Nebraska Genealogy Society.

After a short stay at the University of Nebraska Medical Center-Clarkson Tower, Mary passed away there on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at the age of 90 years, 2 months, and 14 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ray, sister Nina Marie Spittler, and son David.

Mary is survived by her daughter Mary Louise Holtzman and husband Robert of Auburn; daughter-in-law Sally Ann Straw of Ashland; grandchildren Larry Ray Lotter, Mary Ann Fass, and Beverly Roettger; 5 step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren Tiffany, Timmari, Franci, Jessica, Sarah, Cameron, Kellie Rae, and Hunter; 12 step-great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren Isaiah, Daijrianna, and Malaci; 9 step-great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at the Auburn Christian Church, with Rev. Frank Zimmerman and Rev. Corey Miller officiating. Pre-recorded music was played, and a duet was performed by Beverly and Kellie Roettger. Pallbearers were Harley Fass, Vernon Straw, William Straw, Ray Lotter, Larry Holtzman, and James Wilson. Dwaine McKnight and Raymond Beason were honorary pallbearers. Burial was in Mt. Vernon Cemetery at Peru.
