Otto M. Volker

Otto Melvin Volker, 91, passed away at Bryan West Hospital in Lincoln on February 11, 2016. Otto and his twin brother were born on the family farm, January 2nd, 1925. They shared their birthday with their mother. Otto was baptized by his grandfather, Pastor Geyer, on February 15, 1925 at St. James Lutheran Church (Long Branch). Otto attended country school through the eighth grade. On February 11, 1940, he was confirmed at Long Branch.

When not working on the family farm, he enjoyed playing baseball and softball with his brothers. Ball games were often against neighboring churches. The youth of the church also enjoyed going roller skating. At 19, Otto was drafted into the Navy and fought in World War II from 1944 -1946. After the war, Otto returned home to farm. On May 9, 1951, he married Helen Bohling. Into this union 5 children were born.

Otto and his family farmed and raised livestock south of Johnson. Otto served the local farmers as a Moorman’s feed salesman for many years. He also served St. James Church as a member of the Cemetery Board for over 40 years. Otto was a member of the Johnson American Legion and the Four State’s Coon Hunters Club. One of his favorite past times was playing cards with family and friends.

Ten years ago, Otto & Helen retired and moved into Johnson. They really enjoyed having the grandchildren and great-grandchildren dropping by after school for cookies or just to say hi.

Otto was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Frieda (Geyer) Volker, brothers and sisters-in-law, Lawrence & Lenora Volker, Erwin “Shorty” & Luetta Volker and his twin, Oscar Volker, sisters and brothers-in-law Edna & Fred Goos, Laura & Arnold Ottemann and Helen & Norman Dirksen, John Dieckhoff, daughter Cindy Gerdes and great-grandson Damian Gerdes.

Survivors include his wife, Helen, daughters Jeanne & Jim Haith of Johnson, Barb & Dave Ahlschwede of Lincoln, Lisa & Danny Wenzl of Burchard, son, Brad & Janice Volker of Johnson, son-in-law Wayne Gerdes of Johnson, sisters Hilda Dieckhoff of Beatrice and Evelyn (Dayle) Johnson of Waverly, 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and many other family and friends.

A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, February 15, 10:30 a.m. at St. James Lutheran (Long Branch) Church near Humboldt. Burial of ashes will follow in the church cemetery, with military honors by American Legion Post #330 of Johnson. Visitation will be at the funeral home in Johnson Sunday noon to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 6:00 to 8:00.
