Pershing Viox

Pershing Frank Viox, one of two children of Frank and Clara (Engfer) Viox, was born May 16, 1918 in Talmage, Nebraska. He attended school in Talmage, and graduated from Talmage High School.

On January 3, 1941 Bud enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Force. He served during World War II in Sicily and Africa, reaching the rank of Tech Sergeant as a mechanic with the 4th Fighter Squadron. After his honorable discharge in 1945, Bud returned to the Talmage area to farm.

On September 4, 1957 Bud married Esther (Casper) Peterson, and welcomed her three children as his own. They continued to live in Talmage, and Bud drove a tank wagon for Peterson Oil in addition to his farming. Even after his retirement, he drove a propane delivery truck for Gottula Propane.

Bud was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Talmage, and also the Talmage American Legion Post #246. Although his hobbies always involved work, he did enjoy taking time off to watch his grandkids in their sports activities. Known to those who knew him as quite a comedian, Bud also served as the town?s unofficial historian.

After being taken to the Nemaha County Hospital in Auburn, Bud was transferred to St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln. It was there he passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at the age of 93 years, 2 months, and 12 days. In addition to his parents, Bud was preceded in death by his wife Esther and sister Lorraine Clivio.

Bud is survived by his children Byron Peterson of Scottsbluff; Sharon Peterson of Denver, CO; Terry and wife Annette Peterson of Auburn; grandsons Erin and wife Julie Peterson, Tyler and wife Michele Peterson, Marty Peterson, Troy Peterson, and Travis Peterson; 5 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were Monday, August 01, 2011 at Faith Lutheran Church in Talmage, officiated by Rev. Glatha Rathjen. Rita Ruenholl was organist for congregational singing. Pallbearers were Marty Peterson, Troy Peterson, Travis Peterson, Erin Peterson, and Tyler Peterson. Honorary pallbearers were Margaret Hernandez, Melvin Snyder, Tony Lintz, Jim Gerking, Don Clark, Norman and Alma Rohlfing. Military honors were provided by American Legion Post #246 of Talmage and the Nebraska National Guard Honors Team. The body was cremated following the services, and inurnment of ashes will be at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City.
