Shirley Fischer

Shirley Elaine (Forbes) Fischer, only child of Herbert Franklin and Mary Ann (Layton) Forbes, was born October 17, 1936 near Alma, Nebraska. She was baptized May 9, 1937 and confirmed October 10, 1946 in the Evangelical Church in Alma. Shirley attended District 12 School through the sixth grade and went to junior high school in Lebanon, Nebraska. She graduated from high school in Huntley, Nebraska in 1954 and attended Kearney State College for one year following high school.

On March 5, 1955 Shirley was united in marriage to Karl J. Fischer at the Methodist Church in Huntley. Their union was blessed with three children: Bruce Allen, Daniel Lee, and Karen Elaine. The couple and their family lived in several towns in Nebraska and a short time in Missouri before Karl and Shirley moved to Auburn, Nebraska in 1987.

Shirley became a member of the Methodist Church in 1952, and on August 28, 1955 was confirmed in and joined the Lutheran Church. She and Karl had been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church since moving to Auburn. Shirley taught Sunday School for many years in the churches she attended. She was a nurse aide for 35 years, a portion of that time at the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn.

After a prolonged battle with cancer, and with family around her, Shirley passed away at her home in Auburn on Sunday, July 4, 2010 at the age of 73 years, 8 months, and 17 days. Her parents preceded her in death.

Shirley is survived by her husband Karl ?Jim? of Auburn; sons Bruce and wife D?Ann of Lincoln; Dan and wife Shelly of Kansas City, MO; daughter Karen Christiansen of Hutchinson, KS; son-in-law Rod Christiansen of Hutchinson, KS; grandchildren Katelyn and Karl ?Jacob? Fischer; Madison, Joshua, Arielle, and Jordan Christiansen; great-granddaughter Samantha; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 7, 1:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Auburn. Burial will be at the Alma Cemetery Thursday, July 8, 1:30 p.m. in Alma. Visitation will be at the funeral home Tuesday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Trinity Lutheran Church Scholarship Fund.
