Edgar "Ed" Bredemeier

Edgar Allen Bredemeier, known affectionately to many as Ed, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026, at the Nebraska Masonic Home in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. Born on January 23, 1936, in DuBois, Nebraska, Ed was deeply rooted in the rural life that shaped his character and contributions.

Ed was one of four children born to Fred and Myrtle (Siske) Bredemeier. His early education encompassed rural school through the sixth grade, followed by a few months in the DuBois School District, culminating in his graduation from Pawnee City High School in 1954. From a young age, Ed’s life was marked by the values of his community and faith, having been baptized and confirmed at Friedens Church, situated south of DuBois.

His commitment to both country and community was exemplified in his service with the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. Upon returning from service, Ed dedicated himself to farming, specializing primarily in cattle and grain operations, with a period devoted to raising hogs and undertaking custom work. Beyond the farm, Ed was an active participant in agricultural circles, notably winning the Nebraska state corn picking contests in both 1965 and 1966, achievements that led him to compete at the national level.

Ed’s involvement extended into numerous local boards, where he worked tirelessly to support and advance his community. He was also a distinguished member of the Masonic Blue Lodge in Pawnee City, achieving the rank of Master Mason. He was a member of all three bodies of the York Rite, and notably served as Grand Commander of Nebraska in 1982-83.

On June 14, 1959, Ed married Carolyn Edwards in a ceremony at the Stella Community Church, where she was an active member. Their marriage was a partnership founded on shared values and love, and together they built a family that brought Ed immense joy. He especially cherished attending the activities of his children and grandchildren, creating memories that will be treasured by all.

Edgar is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn; his children and their spouses: Karen Brown of Parkville, Missouri; Sharon and David Meacham of Parkville, Missouri; Mike and Chris Bredemeier of Stella; and Linda and Tim Shanks of Syracuse. He took great pride in his grandchildren: Rachel Greathouse (Stephen), Elizabeth Dillman (Joseph), Logan and Conner Bredemeier, Jordan (fiancé Andrew Smith), Suzanna, Robert, and Liam Shanks, and great-granddaughter Emerald Dillman. Additionally, Ed’s family circle included his sisters-in-law Jan Bredemeier of DuBois, Nebraska, and Merrie Edwards of Lincoln, along with numerous nieces and nephews who held him in high regard.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his son-in-law Jim Brown, his brother Arden, his sisters Alene (Paul) Davis and Elane (Don) Burkhalter, as well as his brother-in-law Joe (Paula) Edwards, sisters-in-law Margaret (Peter) Arcus and Julie (Jeff) Munford, and Merrie’s significant other John Miller,.

Ed Bredemeier’s life was one marked by dedication—to his family, his faith, his country, and the land he lovingly tended. His legacy endures in the hearts of those who knew him and in the community he served. He will be remembered with profound respect and affection.

The funeral service will be on Saturday, May 2, 2:00 p.m. at the Stella Community Church in Stella. Burial will follow in the Prairie Union Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 5:00 to 7:00.
