Gary Oldfield, Sr.

July 30, 1943 — March 14, 2016

Gary Dean Oldfield, son of Franklin Paul and Audrey Merle (Weaver) Oldfield, was born July 30, 1943 at Auburn, Nebraska. He grew up in the Nemaha, Nebraska area, where he attended school.

On June 23, 1963 Gary was united in marriage to the girl of his dreams, Diana Lynn Furnas, in the Brownville Christian Church by Rev. Ward Merritt. They were blessed with two sons, Gary, Jr. and Tony. Neither Gary nor Diana had a chance to finish high school, so they studied together and received their GED’s in about 2005.

Gary supported himself and his family for many years on the Missouri River. He worked as a deck hand on the river, and was also a commercial fisherman and trapper. He guided hunts to supplement his income, and worked as a farm hand for Randall Smith, Max Peeler, and Dave Meyerkorth. Gary’s work resume also included the Excel Beef Plant at Rock Port, Missouri and Cooper Nuclear Station at Brownville, Nebraska.

An outdoor lover, Gary also enjoyed people. He was more than willing to pass his knowledge and skills in the outdoors to family and others. He loved kids, not only his grandkids but any kid who he crossed paths with. Other pursuits included hunting mushrooms and playing cards. Gary enjoyed buying “stuff” (junkin’) and having yard sales.

Diana passed on February 27, 2015, and Gary longed for the time they could be together again. On a balmy afternoon, March 14, 2016, Gary went to join Diana while fishing on the banks of the Nemaha River near Auburn, Nebraska. He passed away at the age of 72 years, 7 months, and 13 days. In addition to his parents and his wife Diana, he was preceded in death by his brothers George and Leonard and sisters Gladys Haith and Helen Den.

Gary is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law Gary Oldfield, Jr. of Omaha; Tony and Becky Oldfield of Auburn; grandchildren Scott Oldfield, Cameron Oldfield, Tesla Oldfield, Blake Oldfield; sister Mildred Brown of Council Bluffs; other relatives and many friends.
