Lucille Schaefer

May 26, 1913 — August 31, 2016

Olive Lucille (Able) Schaefer, one of ten children of John and Olive Laurinda (Tobler) Able, was born May 26, 1913, near Peru, Nebraska. Lucille attended District #3 School and graduated from high school there in 1931.

On October 3, 1934, Lucille was united in marriage to Lloyd Schaefer in Hiawatha, Kansas. The couple made their first home in Brock, Nebraska until 1959, when they moved to Nebraska City. After a couple of years, they moved to Omaha. While there, Lucille and Lloyd lived at the Omaha Education Association Manor, where Lloyd worked. After he retired in 1970, they moved to Auburn, Nebraska to live out their lives.

Lucille didn’t work outside the home, but she kept very busy. She loved to bake, and enjoyed handwork, especially sewing. She was a nature lover, and watching birds was a favorite pastime. Lucille liked to grow flowers and vegetables in her gardens. And although she had no children of her own, she loved having children around and enjoyed doing things for them.

On March 10, 2011, when she could no longer live in her home alone, Lucille moved to the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn. It was there she passed away on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at the age of 103 years, 3 months, and 4 days. She was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd; sisters Harriett Louise, Charlotte Sayer, Ruth Rawson, Mildred Groff and Betty Tankersley; brothers Ernest Able, Virgil Able, Wesley Able and Frank Able; brothers-in-law August “Gus” Schaefer, Edward “Lowell” Schaefer; and sister-in-law Nellie Armstrong.

Those left to remember Lucille’s caring ways include many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A funeral service will be Wednesday, September 7, 10:00 a.m. at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery at Peru. Visitation will be at the funeral home Tuesday noon to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 6:00 to 7:30.

Memorials are suggested to Peru State College Foundation Scholarship Fund.
