Lucy Suhr

Lucy (Hinrich) Schutte Suhr was born February 20, 1919 in Wakefield, Nebraska. One of 12 children of Gustav C. and Emily (Miller) Hinrich, she was baptized and confirmed at St. Mark?s Lutheran Church in Pender, Nebraska. Lucy attended elementary school in Wakefield and high school in Pender, graduating in 1937.

In August of 1937 Lucy was united in marriage to Edward T. Schutte in Elk Point, South Dakota. Two children, Eugene and Edine, were born to this union. Edward passed away in 1940, and in July of 1945 Lucy married Alvin G. Suhr in Pender. One daughter, Sharen, was born to this union.

Lucy began her work career in the Pender State Bank. After she and Alvin moved their family to Auburn, Nebraska in 1948, she owned and operated the Gingham Grill Restaurant in Auburn. She later served as secretary for Dwight Griffiths Law Office in Auburn. Lucy then worked for Auburn State Bank, retiring in 1985, after 48 years of service as an officer.

Lucy was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Auburn since 1948. She served as church treasurer for 13 years, taught Sunday school, and was a member of Dorcas Circle, previously serving as its president. Lucy belonged to the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries in both Pender and Auburn, and had served as president of both organizations. She held memberships in the National Association of Bank Women, Auburn Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber Ambassadors, and served on the boards of the Auburn Senior Center and Good Samaritan Society-Auburn.

Late in her life, Lucy moved into Long?s Creek Assisted Living Facility in Auburn. She enjoyed her time there joining in the activities for residents. With her family around her, Lucy passed away at Long?s Creek on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at the age of 93 years, 8 months, and 11 days. In addition to her parents and her first husband Edward, Lucy was preceded in death by her second husband Alvin in 1993, son Eugene in 2008, brothers Ernest, Art, Fred, and Robert, and sisters Dora Murray, Ruth Hinrich, Rosa Bennett, and Susan Smith.

Those left to celebrate her life include her daughters Edine and husband Allan Moody of Auburn; Sharen and husband Stanley Sorensen of LaVista; daughter-in-law Norma Schutte of Lincoln; grandchildren Kelley (Schutte) Peterson and husband Ken; Bruce Schutte and wife Lynne; Diane (Schutte) Waters and husband Dave; Mark Moody and wife Patricia; Marla (Moody) Jones and husband Doug; Craig Moody and wife Jaquel; Jeff Sorensen; Jill (Sorensen) Evans and husband Steve; John Sorensen and wife Jennifer; great-grandchildren Nikki (Moody) Hayes and husband Dan; Travis, Molly, and Emily Moody; Thomas Schutte and wife Ashley; Georg Schutte; Zoe Peterson; Megan Waters; Kelsea (Jones) Blevins and husband Brian; Trent Jones; Alexa, Sierra, and Rylee Moody; Jessica and Brody Sorensen; great-great-grandchildren Annie, Lucy, and Jack Hayes; Breea Blevins; brother Gustav (Doris) Hinrich; sisters Stella Limerick and Elsie Jepsen; sisters-in-law Pearl Hinrich and Dorothy Hinrich; other relatives and friends.

Lucy?s family would like to sincerely thank everyone for their kindness and thoughtful expressions of love and comfort at a time when it is deeply needed and appreciated. May God bless each and every one of you.

Funeral services were Monday, November 5, 2012 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Auburn, officiated by Rev. Ken Miller. Special music was provided by Kelsea Blevins, Trent Jones, and Alexa, Sierra, & Rylee Moody. Donna Caspers and Edith Schlange were organist and pianist for congregational songs. Pallbearers were Mark Moody, Craig Moody, Bruce Schutte, Jeff Sorensen, John Sorensen, and Doug Jones. Burial was in St. Mark?s Lutheran Cemetery at Pender, Nebraska.
