Martin L. Rhoades

October 2, 1947 — October 20, 2022

Martin Lynn Rhoades, one of two sons of Kenneth C. and Myrth Lorene (Jones) Rhoades, was born October 2, 1947, in Aspinwall, Nebraska. He attended school in Nemaha and graduated from Nemaha High School.

On September 13, 1969, Martin was united in marriage to Nancy L. Nixon at the Shubert Christian Church in Shubert, Nebraska. They made their home in rural Nemaha and would be blessed with two children, Lisa M. and Marty W.

Martin was a farmer from a young man to later in life, and it was his passion. He also worked at Armstrong Cabinets in Auburn, Nebraska, and he and Nancy owned and operated the Nemaha One Stop for many years. Enjoying coffee with friends in the One Stop continued long after he and Nancy sold the business. He most recently had worked outages at Cooper Nuclear Station between Nemaha and Brownville.

In his spare time Martin had many interests. He enjoyed exhibiting produce and other items at the Richardson County Fair in Humboldt, watching Husker football and volleyball, and going to the casino. Enjoying the outdoors by hunting mushrooms and ducks and fishing was a joy to him.

Martin was a longtime member of the Shubert Christian Church, and lately had enjoyed attending services at the Brownville Christian Church. He had been a member of the Nemaha Rescue Squad, the Shubert bowling league, and enjoyed playing cards with Nancy and friends in the McCandless School community.

As his health declined Martin and Nancy made the decision that he would stay at home under her care and then with help from hospice. He passed away at his home in Nemaha on Thursday, October 20, 2022, just 18 days after his 75th birthday. In addition to his parents, Martin’s sister and brother-in-law Barbara and Richard DeHappart and brother and sister-in-law Landon and Viola Rhoades preceded him in death.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Nancy of Nemaha; children Lisa and husband Steve Kitchen of Westerly, RI, Marty and wife Jamie Rhoades of Firth; grandchildren Allie Trefes, Andrew Kitchen, Brycen Rhoades, Anna Hamm, Cole Hamm, and Jaden Kouba; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

A memorial service will be Saturday, October 29th, 10:30 a.m. at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn. Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 6:00 to 8:00. Burial of ashes will be at Steele Cemetery in Falls City at a later date.
