Viola H. Grotrian

Viola Hermina Teten, oldest of four children of Edward and Anna (Eiben) Teten, was born November 12, 1924. She was baptized January 1925 and confirmed April 1938 at St. Paul Lutheran Church near Talmage, Nebraska. She attended rural school near her home and graduated from Talmage High School in 1942.

On May 5, 1947 Viola was united in marriage to Donald Grotrian at St. Paul Lutheran Church at Talmage. The couple was blessed with five children: Charles, Barbara, twins Robert and Ronald, and Gerald. They first made their home in the Talmage area and then moved to a farm near Brock, Nebraska where they lived for the next 51 years. Don and Vi moved to Auburn in 2009.

Viola worked at grocery stores in Talmage and as a substitute cook for 15 years at Johnson-Brock Public School. She was also very involved in helping Donald with the farming. Viola was active member of Faith Lutheran Church Paula Ruth Circle, Dorcas Circle, and Quilting Circle. She enjoyed cooking, baking, making quilts, jean blankets, and afghans. Each of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren have quilts “Made Especially for you by Grandma Vi”.

In May of 2016 Viola entered the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn where she resided for the next 2½ years. On January 11, 2019 Viola was transferred to the Nemaha County Hospital in Auburn, where she passed away on January 14, 2019.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald; brothers Merlyn, Victor, and Roger Teten; son Gerald and son-in-law Bill Lynch; brothers- and sisters-in-law Glen and Darlene Grotrian, Loretta and Carl Teten, Donald Wellman and Paul Grotrian.

Those surviving are: Charles and wife Judy Grotrian of Nebraska City; Barbara Lynch of Auburn; Robert and wife Kathy Grotrian of Humboldt; Ronald and wife Deb Grotrian of Johnson; Chris Grotrian of Johnson; grandchildren and great-grandchildren Jay and Michel Grotrian, Reis, Max, and Benet; Sheri Grotrian and Ian; Jennifer and Eric Gooding, Connor & Kyleigh; Jeff and Shannon Lynch, Creighton and Bentley; Bobbi and Steve Tegtmeier, Derek, Dylan, and Jenae; Ryan and Kim Grotrian, Sayge and Sawyer; Kerri and Brian Lambert, Ainslee and Greyson; Derek & Crystal Grotrian, Peyton & Evan; Douglas and Hanna Grotrian and one on the way; Junior and Shannon Grotrian, Hannah and Wyatt; Jackie and Craig Chedsey and Violet; Jamie & Monique Grotrian, Cooper and Joslyn; sisters-in-law Georgia Teten of Nebraska City, Mary Teten of Talmage, Lois Wellman of Auburn, Dolores Grotrian of Johnson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

A funeral service will be Thursday, January 17, 10:00 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Talmage. Burial will follow in St. Paul Cemetery near Talmage. Visitation will be at the funeral home in Auburn Wednesday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 6:00 to 7:30.
